can't believe this just happened. just trying to get through this. >> developing right now, what went wrong. a train crashes into path of another train along a busy commuter rail. what we're learning about passengers hurt and how it it happened. and rain is starting to move into the region. what you can expect throughout the day. >> i'm angie goff. >> and i'm richard jordan. welcome to news 4 today. it's saturday, may 18th, 2013. we're going to start out with breaking news. we're learn iing about a missil launch out of north korea. nbc news reports the country launched three missiles into the sea off the east coast of the korean peninsula. the military tracked the missiles. it's not clear what kind of missiles might have been launched. this comes after months of rising tensions between north korea and the u.s. and south korea. we're going to bring more information as we get it but a big development this morning. weather wise, we might be

de dealing with a little unsettled weather. >> let's go to chuck bell for a first check of the forecast. >> good morning to both of you. a little bit unsettled is a good way to describe it it. the 80 degrees from yesterday is a thing of the past. a front stalled out just down to the south of the metro area. along the front. is where the best chances for rain will be. the breeze will hold temperatures down today. the bulk of the rain is going to stay just down to the out is of the d.c. area. in and around town and up across northern maryland, don't stray too far from your umbrella. all getting in on some of the light rain early this morning. temperatures are in the mid-60s now. highs around 70 degrees for a lucky few. shower chances will dot the landscape. new this morning, the sheriffs office says a man is

dead and. it was difficult to see. this is where deputies found the man's body at the home. we expect to find out his name later today. still no word if the woman who killed him is in custody. also new this morning, a strong earthquake rocks the coast of japan. a magnitude 6.0 quake hit just northwest of the fukushima power plant. that's northeast of tokyo. so far no reports of damage to the plant and the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami warning. we are tracking new developments this morning out of connecticut. that's where cleanup from a train collision last night is starting to cause major problems for rail transportation throughout the rtheast. all amtrak service is suspended after the two trains crashed. george collie has the latest.

>> it was a loud bang and you saw smoke. >> reporter: he had just hopped on the train heading to grand central when the collision oc r occurred. >> so nervous and scared. i've never had anything like this happen to me. we were all panicking. we didn't know what to do. you can hear everyone saying relax, be calm. then i heard, was a doctor on board. when i heard that, i knew. >> reporter: he suffered a lower back injury but is thankful to be walking away. the same can be said for laura brooks. >> we heard a boom and the train had jumped. we just were up out of our seat. >> reporter: she took the train to drop off prom dresses for the less fortunate. she suffered a knee injury. >> i looked at the front of the train and saw it was all messed up on the left side. >> reporter: she limped out of the hospital where 41 people arrived by ambulance or in their

own cars. diane alger says they were prepared for the worst. >> we heard we might expect 90 patients here. so far it hasn't been as bad as we originally thought. >> reporter: she says the majority of the injuries are minor, but one patient was hurt seriously. >> shoulder pain, leg pain, back pain, people who were jostled, but nothing as serious as the head and neck injury that we have. >> i can't believe this is happening. my lower back is tight. just trying to get through this. >> that was nbc's george collie reporting. dozens are still recovering this morning. we'll have more in the next half hour. get ready for delays on our own metro today. they are doing work on three out of the five lines. some stations are even going to be closed. crews are doing track maintenance as well as getting some of the tracks ready.

happening right now, a way to break a record. a man in chicago is well on his way to breaking the world record for longest ferris wheel ride. he's approaching the 60-hour mark. that record is 30 hours and 35 seconds. once he hits that, he plans on spinning until he's at an even 48. >> a new asteroid will give earth a fly-by later this month.

dallas. the sheriff says it was one of at least three tornados that may have touched down last night. one house took a direct hit. so far there have not been any reports of injuries. today more families will begin returning to their homes since the tornadoes in granbury. a series of twisters hit wednesday night killing six people. emergency crews stopped searching for victims. they do not think anyone else was killed in the storm. just looking at the images, they are so terrifying, all the damage that was done. this morning we're hearing from one of the youngest survivors. >> 6-year-old cole curly remembers everything that happened when a twister hit his home. jay gray reports. >> reporter: cole curly's parents covered his eyes as the family rushed out during the storm. but but as he came home for the first time today, his eyes were wide open. the tiny steps of this 6-year-old led him through a house ravaged by the storm.

but he also began to walk back through the memories of that night. >> i was scare d. and i heard these noises and then i thought something blew off the roof. >> reporter: this is that bathroom where cole's family hid as the l twister ripped apart everything around him. >> i was sitting right here. like right here. my little brother was right here. >> reporter: scared he says they began to pray. >> god, please let the storm pass. please let us be okay. >> reporter: they did survive and his dad says that fate and the bond that helped get them through the tornado will be the strength they lean on to help come back. >> we're going to get it fixed. we live in a good house. it will be even better when we're done. >> reporter: the determination and support that so many families here rely on as they work through what the deadly storms left behind.

a few drops near gaithersburg this morning. leesburg, upperville, just a little light rain. south of town, all the way down towards fredericksburg. showery weather this morning. it's going to continue through the remainder of the day. temperatures in the 60s. highs later on this afternoon in the upper 60s to maybe near 70 degrees. we'll talk about your sunday and the week ahead which leads into memorial day. that's coming up. in a few hours, the republican candidate for virginia governor becomes the official gop nominee. he will be formally nominated this morning. this is happening at the second day of the republican party of virginia's state convention. a poll released this week show the democrat pulling ahead by a 5% margin. one organization though is planning to crash today's party. planned parenthood is expected to protest the event. the planned parenthood action

fund has launched a website called keep kent out to protest some of his policies. the bureau chief will be in richmond for the nomination and all the action. you can watch her reports later today on news 4. also today d.c. council member tommy wells will officially throw his hat in the race for d.c. mayor. he's been on the d.c. council since 2006. he's the second council member to announce their candidacy. d.c. mayor vin sent gray has not said whether whether he will seek reelection. police are looking into what caused a deadly argument. police say jessica stooit argued with her neighbor thursday night. after that argument, she walked into her home, collapsed and medics rushed her to the hospital where she died. the mother of two young kids had wounds consistent with being

stabbed. residents in that area are stunned. >> she was very outgoing, had a good heart. >> police have not release d th name of the man she was arguing with. police are investigating a shooting involving a security guard in montgomery county. it it happened last night off featherwood drive in silver spring. police say a security guard and several men started fighting. they struggled over a gun. the weapon went off hitting one of the subpoenas in the leg. he's expected to recover. the security guard, though, he was not hurt. officers did take one person into custody. they are looking for more witnesses now. a heads up if you're flying out of bwi this weekend. one runway is closed until 4:00. bwi says it's closing commercial runways so crews can make much-needed improvements to the

airfield. a separate runway will be used for overnight flights. it's a day of pomp and circumstance. three colleges and universities give their seniors their big sendoff today. in the district georgetown begins their ceremony at 9:00 a.m. in the event of rain, ceremonies will be indoors. catholic university begins at 10:00 a.m. and in virginia george mason ceremony begins at 10:00. senator mark warner will give that address. the first lady is in national today. she will deliver the commencement address at martin luther king jr. academic magnet high school for health sciences and engineering. it's her second ceremony in as many days. yesterday she was right here in our area giving new graduates a proper sendoff at bowie state university. mrs. obama reminded the new grads about bowie's place in

history and about their importance in their new degrees. >> i'm thinking about all the people who took the extra job and toiled and bled and prayed so we could have something better. >> president obama heads to georgia today. he will deliver the commence m address at mohr house college in atlanta. plenty of people are talking about personal experiences the president shared yesterday. during an economic trip to baltimore, he opened up about his own experience growing up without his father around. >> i grew up without a father. i always tell people that as great and heroic a job as moms do, particularly for a family of boys, that's a hard situation. >> the president was talking to a group that promotes families

right now people are trying to decide whether to charge a driver who crashed his car into

a bank. chopper 4 flew over the scene last night. you can see the car crashed into the cardinal bank. this is a intersection of enterprise and commerce in sterling, virginia. no one was inside the bank or no one inside the bank was injured. it's not clear how much damage the accident actually caused. and a d.c. who was tied up in a violent home invasion is speaking out. she opened up the door thinking she heard the mail carrier. then a man barged in and demanded money. this was on wednesday night on massachusetts avenue. the man dragged clark around the house until she gave him $40 from her purse and jar full of change. he tied her up with a cord from a vacuum cleaner. >> i was scared to death. i thought he was unnecessarily brutal. and thuggish in his behavior. there's no reason for him to do that. i know he wouldn't think that.

>> she's 69 years old and has lived in that home for decades. police are still looking for the attacker. turning to the weather now, just in time for the weekend, here comes the rain. >> i know it. keep in mind, it it won't rain all the time all weekend. so there's a little good news in the the forecast. but if you have plans to be outside either today or tomorrow on your weekend, be advised there will be at least a chance for showers at almost any time both today and on your sunday. i wish i could give you better news after such a beautiful week here in the washington area. cloudy skies have moved back in. as a result, rain chances are on the up and up around here. already raining mainly down to the south of town. there's even a few sprinkles in and around the metro. a little bit of early morning light out there. there are rays of sunshine. but rain chances are definitely around for most of your weekend. mostly cloudy.

a muggy 65 degrees this morning in washington. . over the next couple hours, temperatures aren't going to move a whole lot thanks to the clouds. we should be stranded mostly in upper 60s to right around 70 degrees. in and around town, showers to the south this morning. off and on shower chances through the afternoon. looking a little more likely by late this afternoon into early this evening and fading out as the overnight hours progress. current temperature of 59 in hagerstown this morning. 62 theat the inner harbor. there will be at least a chance for some showers up there. if you're planning ongoing up to the preakness, don't need to worry about an all-day rainout. steadier rain chances throughout much of the day. light rain across most of louden county, especially in the northern half of the county. showers moving into the western

parts of montgomery county. if you live near 270, rain drops coming your way. light rain showers in the southern half of charles county through st. mary's county. the heaviest rain is across southeastern virginia. that's where the heavy rain and thunderstorm chances will stay today. not much of a chance of thunder. a breeze will keep the cloudy skies and the off and on rain chances through most of your saturday. showers should fade away during the overnight hours. do expect a damp start tomorrow. and better rain chances for the second half of your sunday. not the best weekend. i wish i had better news, but i don't. near 70 today. 72 tomorrow. a sliver of sunshine from time to time. keep your rain gear ready to go. it's not going to be a washout of a weekend, but nonetheless, rain chances are around. warming up to near 80 on monday.

it's for the fiesta asia street festival. the party begins at 10:00 this morning and ends at 7:00 tonight. the street should be reopened by 11:00 tonight. we're also celebrating asian pacific american heritage this month. jinger and francis park are two sisters who started d.c.'s first chocolate shop more than 30 years ago. behind all these sweet treats, it's a story inspired but survival. it began when bombs were going off during the war and their mom escaped north korea. >> she took the chocolate bars back to her house, hid under the burlap blankets again and vowed if i'm going to die, i'm going to die with chocolate in my mouth. >> it really is a fascinating story. an emigrant experience that has evolved into a story that drips with love and lots and lots of chocolate. it's just one of many stories

different ever since. >> go, jordan. when they cross the finish line, she turned around, i was like yeah, that's not jordan. >> reporter: it was robin. >> i was like, she looks just like you. >> reporter: moments later another student cleared up the confusion. >> i was like, i know that girl. her name is robin jeter. jordan just started crying. >> she knew it was her birth name. >> i started crying in the middle of the track meet. i was freaking out. i was hysterical. >> reporter: at louisiana long last, two sisters met. >> i was like, hi. the only thing i could say was you know we look a lot alike. >> jordan was aware she had a sister out there somewhere. for robin, it was a complete surprise. >> who you look like? >> you. >> reporter: her friends have been wondering where she's been lately. >> i'm still going to be here,

unless you stayed up late last night, you missed the end of quite a nats game. they were looking to clinch the series against the padres. and the bats came alive. zimmerman made it happen. in extra inning, they broke the tie and blocked the padres from tying it up again. nats win in ten innings, 6-5. >> good for them. in just a few hours, a maryland woman will try to make history in the preakness stakes. good saturday morning, everyone. get out your black-eyed susans because it's finally preakness day. two weeks ago rosy made history in the kentucky derby. the best finish for a female jockey ever in the derby. the jockey who grew up racing returns home later today.
